With the current release of Natalie Portman's ballet thriller, Black Swan, there is a distinct feel of ballet in the air. I love ballet, especially the costumes. When I was a kid my parents had an art boardgame with a picture card of some ballerina's by artist, Degas, this was when my love affair began and it continues to this very day. On completion of a recent fashion design course my final project was inspired by ballet and included lots of tulle, feathers and sparkles. Ballet inspires us in fashion, not just us mere mortals but those greater gods like Karl Lagerfeld who designed a swan lake tutu for ballerina, Elena Gludjidze in 2009 and the fabulous Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy who designed costumes for Black Swan.
Back to the real world, just how many pairs of ballet flats do you own? I have them in every possible shade. A big thank you to Kate Moss who began wearing them in the late 1990's making them the cult item they are today, and my wardrobe staple. And tell me, wouldn't you just love one of those tutu skirts, like the one SJP wears on the SATC intro, I would wear one with biker boots/jacket if I was 20 years younger! I think there will be lots of pale pinks and floaty fabrics in store for SS11.
